Author's Name: Bob Scheef

Title: Conscientious Objector

I was one of two COs granted by Draft Board 100 in Webster Groves. This happened in 1970 and 1971. Application materials included numerous letters of support from my church and members of my parents' generation, including WW II vets (such as my dad) and a father whose son (a Marine and WGHS graduate) died in the fall of Khe Sahn in 1968. From my personal interview with members of Draft Board 100, I composed detailed notes and wrote a narrative of the experience as an aid to future applicants. To the best of my knowledge, these materials still exist as well as an interview of me (http://www.iwm.org.uk/collections/item/object/80012127) conducted by a representative of the Imperial War Museum, UK.

There also exists a photo of me taken on the day I received notification of the change in my draft status, which occurred after the first lottery assigned me a number of 274 in December 1969.
